Discover the Process Behind My Latest Pet Portrait: Meet Phoenix & Fawkes!

Creating pet portraits is more than just painting. It’s a rewarding journey filled with love, patience, and an appreciation for each pet's unique character. In this post, I will share the process behind my latest creation, featuring the charming duo, Phoenix & Fawkes. I have also included a full-length timelapse video that shows the entire process.

Understanding the Creative Process

Every pet portrait starts with a vision. My methods vary based on the size and complexity of the piece. For some portraits, I block everything in from the beginning, while others I block in as I go. Regardless of the technique, there are key steps I always follow.

For Phoenix & Fawkes, their vibrant colors and lively personalities immediately inspired me. I knew I had to capture their essence on canvas.

Mapping Out the Brightest Colors

A vital step is mapping out the brightest colors and highlights from the start. By prioritizing these elements, I ensure they shine through as the artwork develops. Incorporating color early on allows me to layer shades around these focal points effectively.

For instance, showcasing Phoenix's soft, almost peach colored fur and Fawkes' vivid oranges was a fun challenge. These bright colors infuse life and energy into the portrait.

Below are some progress shots:

Starting with the Darkest Colors

One of the joys of using pastels is the ability to create depth through layering. I always begin by applying the darkest shades before introducing lighter tones. This method enhances realism and creates depth.

In this portrait, I started with deep browns, forming the foundation for their fur. By layering in lighter pigments, I achieved a smooth transition from shadow to light, adding dimension to the fur. The initial layers are blended to create a smooth overall appearance, whereas the following layers are intentionally left unblended to enhance the level of detail in the artwork.

The Versatility of Pastels

Pastels are a forgiving medium, making them ideal for artists at any skill level. One of my favorite aspects of pastels is how easily mistakes can be corrected. If I don’t like a stroke, I can simply remove or adjust it, allowing for a more fluid and expressive process.

This flexibility was especially useful when working on Fawkes' fur. While blending colors, I had peace of mind knowing that any missteps could be easily remedied, ensuring the artwork maintained its desired look.

Glazing to Create Depth

Another technique I frequently use is glazing, which is a thin transparent or semi-transparent layer placed over an existing layer. This method creates smooth transitions that mimic the natural flow of the animals’ fur. It proved particularly helpful for blending the various shades in Phoenix's coat, which has multiple layers and color gradients.

The Eyes

In my opinion, the eyes are always the most captivating aspect of a portrait. I begin by applying dark colors and planning the placement of the highlights. Multiple layers of color are meticulously added to each eye to achieve a sense of depth and a realistic, glossy appearance. Without a doubt, the most gratifying moment is when I add the finishing touches, especially the highlights in the eyes.

The Final Touches: Whiskers

When nearing completion, I always approach the whiskers with a mix of excitement and nervousness. These delicate lines can transform the entire look of the portrait. Whiskers frame the face, adding character and dimension.

For Phoenix & Fawkes, I used a very sharp white pencil and quickly added the whiskers in one smooth movement. If I go too slowly, the whiskers will look forced and won't have a natural flow.
